The Old Guard House
The Old Guard House
Sleeps 10 • Located in Goldsborough, North Yorkshire
Carefully restored at the beginning of 2024, The Old Guard House has been transformed into a remarkable five-bedroom luxury holiday home, combining coastal elegance with fascinating wartime history.
The original building has been thoughtfully furnished in the style of the 1940s, featuring traditional wallpaper, vintage furniture, and authentic wall art displaying British WWII propaganda and government advice. These carefully preserved details create a unique atmosphere that pays tribute to the building’s heritage while offering a memorable stay for modern guests.
One of the property’s standout features is the restored west-facing upper balcony, where guests can take in sweeping views across farmland and the dramatic coastal bays of this stunning stretch of coastline.
A sympathetic extension, designed in keeping with the original architecture, has been added to maximise the spectacular setting. Here you’ll find the spacious kitchen and living area — the heart of the home — designed for comfort, relaxation, and gathering together. With a multifuel burner, large television, and oversized sofas, the space offers a warm and inviting atmosphere for families and friends alike.
Large glass doors span almost an entire wall, flooding the room with natural light and framing breathtaking sea views. These open directly onto the private garden and patio area, while discreet hedging and fencing provide guests with a peaceful sense of privacy.
The Old Guard House is an ideal base for coastal walks, including the new Guardhouse Way created by the estate April 2026, more information can be found on our website, under the heading Mulgrave Walks. Spacious, characterful, and full of history, this unique property offers an unforgettable seaside escape for larger families and groups looking to create lasting holiday memories.

History of the former Army Station
Some HISTORY of the property The Old Guard House was originally developed in 1941 as an Army station to detect enemy ships approaching Britain by sea in WWII. In 1942, it was transferred to the control of the RAF, becoming RAF Goldsborough. It was part of the ‘Chain Home Low’ radar warning system that was developed to detect low flying aircraft used by German forces. Before this, the British were unable to detect low flying planes until they were at close range! RAF Goldsborough was one of the stations set up along the coast to fill this critical gap in coverage. Towards the end of the war, UK radar operations were wound down and after 1945 it was assumed that they would not be needed for some time. This thinking changed dramatically in 1949 with the Soviet test of their first atom bomb. RAF Goldsborough was upgraded in 1951 to counter possible attack by Soviet bombers and was fitted with an enormous underground bunker, in addition to the original WWII ‘Guardhouse’. Aerial photographs show an initial massive excavation taking place in October 1951. The construction of the technical site was about the same size on the ground as the village of Goldsborough! Sadly, the bunker was destroyed by a severe fire in 1958 and was no longer fit for purpose. In 2004, another fire destroyed much of the Guardhouse leaving it badly damaged, roofless, and abandoned until 2022 when our restoration work began.
