Positioned alongside The Station holiday cottage on the original station platform, this remarkable railway carriage offers a rare opportunity to stay in authentic railway heritage accommodation with sweeping sea views towards Whitby.

Built in York in 1956, the carriage is a classic MK1 Tourist Second Open coach, carefully restored and finished in traditional LNER “blood and custard” livery. During restoration, earlier layers of its history were revealed beneath the paintwork, uncovering previous Southern Rail and ScotRail colours from its long service life. Originally operating on the East Coast Main Line, it is believed to have passed through Sandsend and Whitby during its working years.

Now beautifully reimagined, the accommodation is arranged as follows:

The main railway carriage sleeps up to four guests, offering a unique open-plan rail carriage setting that retains its original character while providing modern comfort. In addition, the restored Parcel Wagon provides further accommodation for two guests, creating a flexible layout ideal for families, couples, or small groups.

Together, the spaces combine nostalgic railway heritage with a distinctive coastal atmosphere, set directly on the former station platform with far-reaching sea views.

Layout of the carriage: The entrance doorway is in the centre of the carriage, this leads into the open plan lounge/ kitchen / diner. The bedrooms are located off either side of this and the bathrooms off the bedrooms.

Entrance: Via the gantry, steps and a walkway.

Lounge / Kitchen / Diner: Light and spacious, open plan design.
Electric hob, oven & grill, microwave, washer, dishwasher, fridge with ice box. Dolce Gusto coffee machine. Dining table with chairs and bench. Large luxury corner sofa. Nest of wooden tables. Wall mounted smart TV. Stunning panoramic views along the coast towards Whitby Abbey. Please note the freezer is located in the Goods Shed external to the property.

En-suite: Spacious walk in shower, wash basin and toilet.

Outside: Patio furniture on the gantry. Goods Shed.

Garden: An enclosed garden with stunning views and stepping stones leading to the hot tub and patio area.

A fabulous holiday and a unique property with the most stunning views! We love Sandsend and have stayed in Mulgrave holiday accommodation many times but 'Sandsend Sleeper' is something very special. We were also delighted we added on 'parcel wagon' for our week's stay. Delightful walks; beach walk to Whitby, uphill (initially) via Lythe, called for Sunday lunch at 'The Stiddy' - was excellent and Sandsend itself has lots to offer. We can definitely recommend 'The Hart Inn' for drinks & meals, staff friendly and lovely new garden area at the rear. 'Sandsend Sleeper' received lots of attention from passing walkers so we're hoping we'll be able to book again in the future!!!!. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you for a fantastic holiday.

Once again we have enjoyed our holiday here at Sandsend. The weather has been kind to us and our stay here in the Sandsend Sleeper has been fantastic. Looking forward to coming back to Sandsend later in the year. My retriever R will miss the sands and the sea so much. Very peaceful. I felt my shoulders lift as soon as I arrived. The view is spectacular but for maximum enjoyment you need a good pair of binoculars and a subscription to the Marine Traffic App. Be warned dawn is very early in the Summer! If you like art galleries Geall at Grosmont is excellent. The Stiddy in Lythe is a good pub with a quirky menu with many good vegetarian options. The valley is very peaceful.

Delighted by the presentation of sleeper carriage and parcel wagon. Stunning views of the sea, cliffs and Whitby when the weather allows. Not far from amenities, great access to the beach, Excellent enclosed garden.
